Water Feature Volume Calculator

Both the depth and the pour-layer limit below use this same unit.

From your resin's own technical data sheet — 1:1 and 2:1 are both common.

Total kit volume for one container, from its own label — leave blank to skip the container count.

Description

Resin volume for a pond, river, or other water feature is area × depth — plain geometry, scaled to whichever area and depth units you measured in.

Pouring resin too deep in one layer can cause problems regardless of type: epoxy and polyester generate heat as they cure, and pouring too much at once can cause cracking, clouding, or warping, while UV-cure resin needs a thin enough layer for the light to reach all the way through. How deep a single pour can safely go varies a lot by product — this calculator doesn't assume a number. Enter your own resin's maximum safe pour depth per layer (from its label or technical data sheet) and it works out how many layers you'll need and how much resin goes in each one. Leave it blank to treat the whole depth as a single pour.

Not every resin is mixed from two roughly-equal parts: two-part epoxy and polyurethane resins are, by a volume ratio that varies by product (1:1 and 2:1 are both common), but single-part products (UV-cure or pre-mixed water effects) need no mixing at all, and polyester resin uses a small-percentage catalyst rather than a comparable second part. Pick your resin type and, for two-part resin, enter your own ratio — this calculator splits each pour layer's volume (after the waste/overage buffer) into Part A and Part B, since resin starts curing as soon as it's mixed and each layer is mixed on its own rather than all at once. The other two resin types skip that split and just show the volume needed per layer.

The core volume formula (area × depth) is direct geometry, not a modeling-specific citation — the same category as the Grade & Elevation or Keep-Alive Capacitor calculators.

A maximum safe pour depth per layer is a well-documented general property of resin — exothermic heat buildup for epoxy and polyester, light penetration for UV-cure — but the exact safe depth is product-specific (standard tabletop epoxy and "deep pour" formulations differ by several times over), so this calculator doesn't supply or assume a figure — enter your own product's spec. The same applies to the Part A:Part B mix ratio for two-part resin.

Disclaimer: always follow your resin manufacturer's own instructions for pour depth, mix ratio, and cure time — this calculator only does the arithmetic around numbers you provide.
